Appalachian State University Brand Guidelines

The logos must be reproduced from official, high-resolution, digital artwork provided by the university. The logos may not be reconstructed or altered in any way; this includes cropping or cutting the logos. Do not change the typeface, proportions or colors. Don’t add elements to the logos. Don’t place the logos on top of busy backgrounds. Don’t use the logos or university marks as a “word” or a “letter” within another word.

Only one official university logo should be placed on materials representing the university.

The Appalachian State University logo is available in three colors: black, white and App State gold. The APPSTATE logo is available in the following color combinations: gold APP, black STATE; gold APP, gold STATE; black APP, gold STATE; white APP, white STATE on black background; white APP, gold STATE on black background; black APP, black STATE; gold APP, white STATE on black background.

When using a logo, measure the height of the letter A in Appalachian or APPSTATE. Design elements, type and photos should be at least that far from the logos.

Make sure the logos can be clearly read. If you are unable to read any part of the logos, they are too small.

Do not use the elements to create a different logo. Do not stretch, distort or change the proportions of the logos. Do not remove or crop any part of the logos. Do not add shadows, outlines or other elements to the logos. Do not use any part of the logos to create a pattern. Do not recreate the logos. Do not place the logos on a busy background. Logos should not be used in header images on university websites.

The Block A can be used to represent the university in a less formal way. It should be positioned near the words “Appalachian State University” or “App State” when representing the university in print and online. It should not appear as a standalone graphic element without permission.

Block A Identifiers can replace university logos on printed and online materials, as well as promotional items. Please do not use both — a Block A and a logo.

The Chancellor’s Seal use is restricted to the Office of the Chancellor only. Victory Yosef, The Block A - Heroes, and All for App State should not be used by academic units, initiatives or fundraisers, and should not appear as a standalone graphic element without permission.

All sub-brands must be created or approved by University Communications. All sub-brands must include either “App State,” “Appalachian” or “Appalachian State University” within their sub-brand logo.

University marks cannot be used alone. They may be used within properly branded communication materials. For print and online materials, a university logo or unit logo must be included. For small promotional items, placing “App State” or “Appalachian State University” near the mark is acceptable.

All university marks must be created or approved by University Communications.

Unit logos must be created by University Communications.

Unit logos include a university logo and the name of the unit, department, college or area on campus. Unit logos can replace university logos on printed and online materials, as well as promotional items. Please do not use both — a unit logo and a university logo.

The University Bell may be included in an App State Unit Logo to add an additional visual element.

The icons are not logos and should not be used as logos. Do not create graphics that are considered logos. For example, placing the cross icon next to “Beaver College of Health Sciences” and using that graphic repeatedly throughout a website would be considered a logo.

Letterhead and business envelopes must use the Appalachian State University logo only. Ink must be black only. Paper must be white.

The Appalachian State University logo is the only logo permitted on business cards. Only primary contact information should be included. Professional certification initials should not be included except when the academic certification has a direct bearing on your function represented by the job title on your business card. If you have a doctorate, use the title DR. or use PH.D. at the end of your name, but do not use both. No courtesy title (Mr., Mrs. or Ms.) is used.

The words Appalachian®, Appalachian State™, Appalachian State University®, App State®, Mountaineers™ and Yosef™ are trademarks of Appalachian State University.

All merchandise that is sold with a university logo or trademark must contain the appropriate registration mark or trademark symbol.

Only vendors approved through Affinity Licensing may be used to manufacture any university items intended for sale, and these are subjected to approval by the Office of Trademarks and Licensing.

If campus departments are creating items that are NOT for sale to promote the university or specific events, they are not subjected to the same Affinity Licensing protocols and do not have to include registration marks or trademarks.
