RE-ENGINEERING THE QUOTE:
REDUCING FRICTION FOR BOARD BOOKS.
Why independent authors were quitting before they ever got a single wholesale print price estimate?
A 17-field quote form was killing Board Book Printing's conversions. We turned it into a 90-second experience with live pricing and smart defaults.
The 17-Field
Quote Builder.
CHAPTER 1 • THE EXPERIENCE
Picture this. You’ve spent six months writing and illustrating a board book for your toddler. You’ve finally worked up the courage to self-publish. You find a printer, visit their website, and land on the quote page, ready to figure out what this dream is actually going to cost you.
And then the form loads.
Seventeen fields. Dropdown menus with finish options you’ve never heard of.
A layout that looks like it was designed when dial-up internet was still a personality trait.
You fill it all out anyway, field by field. You finally get to the currency selector. You’re in London, but it’s set to USD. You want GBP.
YOU CLICK BACK.
THE FORM RESETS. EVERY. SINGLE. FIELD.
YOU CLOSE THE TAB.

CHAPTER 2 • THE BUSINESS PROBLEM
That lost author wasn’t an edge case. That was Board Book Printing’s daily reality. They had a great product and a very clear audience: self-publishing authors printing their first children’s books. But their quote calculator, the one page every potential customer had to use, was quietly doing the opposite of its job.
70% Low-Volume Inquiries
70% of quote requests came from 2–5 copy hobby orders, while serious authors abandoned the 17-field form before completing it.
Meanwhile, the serious authors, the ones ready to commit to a real print run of 300 copies or more, were hitting that 17-field wall and walking away. Nobody was tracking where they dropped off. There were no product images. No sense of what the finished book would actually look like. Just dry input fields, repetitive dropdowns, and a submit button at the end of a long tunnel.
Currency Trap
User selects USD → realizes they're in London/UK → has to reset or back-click → restarts process from scratch.
Ghost Leads
No telemetry or tracking of abandonments. Authors were exiting silently in step 2 with no saved contact data.
Visual Void
No previews, product images, or physical paper representations. Zero emotional link to the high-quality product.

into an Experience.
CHAPTER 3 • THE Execution
Instead of rebuilds that take 8 months, we pinpointed the exact transactional calculator silently bleeding publishing revenue, rewriting only that core experience with surgical efficiency.
Abstract text descriptions replaced with crisp rendered layouts of page board parameters. Authors instantly get aligned with product vision.
Interactive real-time parameters dynamically adjust physical spine size representations while adjusting actual pricing models concurrently.
We tied geographical context to a postcode entry. Country updates auto-detect currencies without losing a single character of typed values.
Direct messaging and early validation channels ensure only qualified, serious high-volume orders land on sales desk inbox terminals.

CHAPTER 5 • THE IMPACT
The results were hard to argue with. Mobile, which had previously been a dead zone for the brand, suddenly became a fully functioning part of the funnel. But the biggest win was who was actually making it to the end of the form.

"Design is your primary first impression."
Good design, in this context, isn't just a conversion optimization exercise. It’s empathy. It's a first impression.
